In the new year I’ve been working on keeping a simple focus. I want to be happy. Life is short and unpredictable and I don’t want to waste time losing chances for joy. Keeping it simple goes a long way toward that goal.
I have a tendency to get wrapped up with my own mental wrangling and that hardly ever leads to joy. But when I get out of my head and into the lives around me things change.
As Gandhi said “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
Several weeks ago I took to sending a daily inspirational text message to some of the important people in my life. These aren’t my words. Instead they are the words of great authors, thinkers, healers and the like that I am always gathering.
It’s a small thing but it’s something I do early in the day in an effort to find happiness, to be of service. I select a message I hope will be helpful based on my family and what’s happening with them.
It’s a simple act each day that’s focused outside of myself. It’s a step each day that reminds me of the person I want to become.
It reminds me of my better angels. It’s a step to being simply happy in service.
I don’t know that my daily text messages are changing their lives or making a difference. I do know that I am sending clear, honest, positive energy toward people I love. That makes a difference in me.
That’s enough.
