Girl, Make Your Bed!

Blogger’s note: Please see our updated views based on reference to Rachel Hollis.
I’m going to give you a little behind-the-scene look at what this really magical, glamorous-looking blogging lifestyle is like. What? You don’t think Lowi and I are glamorous? You don’t find us fascinating? Huh?! Well, anyway.
The sneak peek at what it looks like making a blog, at least for me, is a lot like this. I just walked down the hall. Looked into my bedroom and saw the cat sleeping on the bed. I kept walking and thought: Girl, Make Your Bed.
Trust, you don’t know where this is going yet unless you live at my house or you know me really, really, really well.
I haven’t made my bed on the regular since — never. I am sure at one point my mom asked us to make our beds in her long, legal-tablet lists she used to leave on the refrigerator for us to flip through with our free time. They were pages long, might I add. My favorite being: Don’t leave your bathroom looking like a filling station (read: gas station).
I haven’t made my bed for a few reasons:
I don’t think about it because it’s just not that important to me.
In my life 80% of the time when I get up there is still a husband or feline (or both) still fast asleep under the covers.
The other 20% of the time, I will refer you back to reason #1. I just don’t care.
I have been emboldened in this choice with research that supports not making your bed because it lets your linens air out and you don’t trap some sort of bug, critter or something or other in there. I don’t know, I didn’t read the fine print. I went with: it’s healthy to not make your bed. I felt vindicated and moved on.
Anyway, as I was saying ….
I was putting new sheets on the bed the other day (OK I guess I do sort of make the bed during this process but there aren’t any pillow shams or decorative pillows) and as soon as the blankets were all nice and smooth my cat, Bhakti, jumped right up and laid down. Hmmm, I said to myself: I think she’s a neatnik.
She never really lays down on the bed during the day and when she does it’s always at the fringes where the tangled mass of sheet/blanket is not. I pondered, do you think she likes a made bed?
And just like that all my reasons for not making the bed regularly vanished. The things I will do for a cat’s happiness.
I still usually don’t make the bed when I get up in the morning because reason #2 still applies (human/cat still asleep) but later when everyone is awake and up and about I have been making the bed… for Bhakti, the cat. I still don’t make the bed nicely and there still aren’t throw blankets, shams, decorative anything and it looks like a 4-year-old made the bed but —  made it is.
I have been pondering reading, “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis, which I suppose that’s where the phrase “Girl, make your bed” came from.
And just like that, friends, we have a blog AND a poorly made bed with a cat on it. All it took was walking down the hallway.
Goes to show you may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks but you can teach humans anything if they have the proper motivation.
