Life Lesson: Social Media is the Virtual Bathroom Wall

When you decide that you are going to write a blog you can’t plan what will happen next. You’ve put yourself out there into the public medium for open critique. That can come back to you in all forms: some love it, some ignore you and others fall in the vast between spaces.

It can be like high school for the (quasi) grown ups out there in social media. And let’s be honest, it’s a popularity contest! We all want the followers, just in a different way than maybe we did at 17.

At times, those “followers” can be unclear. Like earlier this week, I received a text message from a phone number I didn’t recognize with one word: “Slut”

Now I suppose it should’ve upset me or something but I laughed. In fact, I texted it to Lowi and said “I don’t know this person but apparently they know me.” Now for some this word could be offensive, to a teenage boy it’s like a life’s dream, so I am not sure where you land on this one.

My guess is that it was an errant text and I choose to think of it as something funny.

It made me realize though that texting, Twitter, Facebook and the like are all what bathroom walls and stalls were to a Sharpie marker in the ’80s. We’ve come such a long way and yet, “slut” is still the word we use to talk about each other.
