Torture Report #7: High Miles, Low Miles, T-Shirts and My Rims Are What?

(G) For those of you following along, you know that my husand and I headed to Florida this weekend to visit family and run the Everglades Ultra. We were jazzed up to run in a tropical environment given that our high temp in Ohio lately was around 25 degrees.
I was a little nervous about pythons, gators, and panthers but, unfortunatey, we were derailed before we got started by sight-obscuring fog/haze. Said fog/haze lead us directly into the island of deistruction on Tamiami Trail also known as oddly jutting out curb.
I am not sure if you can tell from this photo, but the right lane leads directly into the curb!  Imagine not being able to see because of the FOG!  Yep, now you’re with me.

Two blown tires and a bent rim later we were left walking toward our hotel and our hopes of running in a race that day were escaping as quickly as the air out of our tires. It was 6 am and we were carless, tireless and a little shaken walking down the sidewalk and randomly running up to tire shops noting their phone number and open times.

When it all shook out, we were down a race, up a rental car and out more money than I care to mention. And our car wouldn’t be fixed until Monday. We finally made it back to my in-laws in Sarasota and went out to run off our frustration.

All told this week, I have amassed about 14 miles. A far cry from what I’d hoped but we’re thankful nobody was injured.
It seems the race was a blast and offered all that was promised. Even this guy showed up at mile 23.

This week I have some major miles to make up.
(L) My week wasn’t nearly as exciting as G’s, thankfully.  My high mileage day was Saturday at 16 miles.  Now, let me remind you that I have a couple of marathons under my belt.  Sixteen miles is not the furthest I have run.  However, when I finished on Saturday all I could think was that, “50 is going to be a long, long…long way.”
AND….A BIG THANK YOU TO G FOR OUR NEW T-SHIRTS!!

We have also hit single digits in terms of how many weeks we have left to train!
9 weeks and counting….

Tuesday’s weekly Torture Report is designed to keep all of you posted on the insanity of training for a race to celebrate G’s 40th birthday. The goal is 50 miles but we’ll see how it goes. To find out more on how this plan was set in motion, check out Lowi’s blog. If you missed the last Torture Report, check it out here.

Angela, so sorry to hear about your race and car. Thankfully, no one was hurt. This was a lot more excitement than you imagined. Wow!

Thanks Helene. As Bruce Springsteen said, “Some day we will look back on this and it will all be funny.”
