Reminder: Go Get Your Mammogram

Sydney’s Bridal Shower

It’s that time of year again.  Its Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You’ve run the races, worn your pink shirts and donated to your favorite breast cancer charity.  Now it’s time to go get your mammogram.  Don’t put it off another day.  Make the call and set up your appointment.

Every year, we hear stories about women whose cancer was found because of a routine mammogram.  We all know someone who has had cancer and we know the statistics, but we still don’t think it will happen to us.  It all starts to become white noise.

Last year, I shared my own personal experience with receiving a cancer diagnosis  in hopes that you might hear my story above the white noise.  I wanted you to stop what you were doing and make the appointment.  Many of you did just that and you know what that means?  It means it’s time for your annual mammogram again.

There is never a good time get a routine test.  Nobody wants to leave work and it’s easy to convince ourselves that it can wait, especially if we don’t have any signs or symptoms of a problem.  I can tell you that it’s also never a good time to be diagnosed with cancer.  We had a lot going on last year.  Plans had to be changed.  Our lives were upended for awhile.  It’s been a challenging year for our whole family.

I keep thinking about my own little world and wonder what would have happened if I had not had my routine mammogram last year?  What if I had waited until this year?  My treatment and prognosis might have been very different.  I thought last year was full, but right now we are 3 months from our daughter’s wedding. Waiting would have not only been detrimental to my health, but our lives would look very different right now.

It’s never a good time, but NOW is the best time to get your tests.  If you won’t make time to do it for yourself, DO IT FOR YOUR FAMILY.
