Life Lesson: All Grown Up?

IMG_3818

Having two daughters who are out of the house and living on their own gives me a lot more alone time but not necessarily free time. In fact, there are some weeks when I feel like I should keep my phone line open just in case they want to say, “and another thing…” as they pass by on their end. I love that my girls feel like they can call me for anything and they feel I can handle whatever they dish out. Other times, I wish they would keep their dish to themselves because once it’s out there, it’s out there!

It’s like having a person you can vent to about anything and then when you walk away you feel so much better, but in this case, mom (me) is left wondering if, perhaps, you have driven into a ditch since she last spoke to you. Meanwhile, you are off with your roommates or friends and you have long forgotten that you hated your life, classes, job and anything else that popped into your psyche while you were on your rant.

Hey, it’s okay, mom can handle it, right? Yes, but could you send me a follow up to the conversation? How about a “hey, thanks for listening, I am good”, “still alive,” or even “hey mom! You are the bomb, I don’t know what I would do without your unconditional love and guidance.” You know something like that.

Anyway, for all of you moms out there who are strapping kids in car seats and trying to get them to eat their lunch, I got news for you: That preschool thing has nothing on this grown up and out of the house stage of parenting! So buckle up, it’s going to be a crazy ride. Oh, and make sure you pack your Ph.D in Psychology, your meditation cushion, your Bible, good music, some snacks and, perhaps, a flask just to be on the safe side.
