Life is all about risk. When we step on the bus the first day of school, away from our mother’s embrace, we risk everything we have ever known for something more. Knowledge. Friends. Hope. Independence. Confidence. Opportunities. Growth. A Greater Self-Esteem. Love. Challenge. While we don’t really understand that we are embarking on this journey at 5…we are. Sometimes we get less than what our parents hoped for. We often find Enemies. Boredom. Lack of self-esteem. Illness. Few Opportunities. Doubt. Walls. Fear. Broken Hearts. It’s these negative side effects that can stop us in our tracks. We let the fear of these things keep us at home.
When our parents put us on the bus that morning they know these things. They know we will endure hardship. They know life is not always going to be easy, but they push us up those stairs anyway. Why? Because they are crazy freaks, that’s why!
Okay, not really. It’s because life is also beautiful and fun and if we don’t go out into the big, bad world how will we ever know what is outside of our four walls?
Our parents put us on that bus because they know life is about the package deal. We can’t have the good without the bad. We will never appreciate our opportunities without failure, our friends without enemies, joy without pain, and love without some heartache along the way.
Nobody likes the negative side effects of life but as we get older I think we accept that they are a necessary part of our growth.
It’s tempting sometimes to stay on the safety of the sidewalk, but I believe we were put here to get on the bus!
