The Many Seasons of Summer

Summer has officially arrived and with it, the season of change.

G, started the conversation a few weeks ago when she let the cat out of the bag that they were selling their house and moving.  In fact, this weekend, she and John are sorting through their options now that they are footloose and fancy free.

How? What? When? Where?

All good questions and not my story to tell.  We will all just need to be patient as they set their plans in motion.

G, isn’t the only one in the midst of change, though.  In fact, it feels like we have been in transition for the last year.  Actually, as I began reflecting on all of it, I wondered if it was really a phase or if this was just life because I couldn’t actually pinpoint when the shift began.  I feel like we have been growing, evolving, altering our thoughts, shifting our perspectives and changing in ways I couldn’t imagine since…circa 1995?  Actually, I think it was earlier than that.

Does this resonate with anyone?

In the last 4 years we have experienced love and loss, added to our family, had countless moves, new jobs, graduations, trips, holidays and many family discussions revolving around something new on the horizon.  Every time we pick up the phone, we wonder what news is on the other side. By most standards we have had a lot of change, but who hasn’t?

In fact, as I sit here writing this blog I have a dear friend who is currently moving out of her house of 2O plus years and another friend who in one breath just told me her daughter is having a baby and her son is looking at moving across the country. So much joy and apprehension in one sentence.

When G spoke about change a few weeks ago, she reminded us that most things we want or even think we want, are on the other side of discomfort or some kind of disruption. Then there are the things we don’t know are hurtling toward us, we don’t choose, we wouldn’t choose or WOULD choose a million times over.  All of these things bring change and while G isn’t wrong, they often come with some kind of cost, they can also bring so many rewards.

Oftentimes, we close our eyes, hold our breath and pray for things to stop or just settle down.  While things occasionally move at a slower pace, allowing us to catch up, life never fully stops.  As the Greek philosopher, Heraclitus said, “the only constant in life is change.”

As we progress through these summer months, we are going to share more about  what is happening in our own lives, and how we are learning to embrace change and roll with it even when we might be kicking and screaming inside.
