“Making the extra effort to say thanks in a genuine, personal manner goes a long way. It is pleasurable to do, and it encourages more of the same good behavior.”
-Richard Branson
Everyone loves to get real mail. You know the card or letter that comes via snail mail? It’s so exciting to go outside to the mailbox and find something, which is not a bill or solicitation for money of any kind, and find that precious piece of mail that has your name scrolled on it. It takes us back to when we were young and our parents would send us out to the mailbox. Ninety-nine percent of the time the only thing in the mailbox was for them, but every now and then it was something special for us. The anticipation of opening that letter was almost palpable. It’s the same for me today. I love to get a card and thanks to G, who is awesome at sending cards and such in the mail, it happens for me now and then.
This last weekend while my daughter was performing at a local restaurant a family left her this beautiful note along with a tip. They not only were total strangers they were visiting from France! She will likely never see these people again and there was nothing in it for them. They just felt the pull to say something nice and they took out a napkin and did it!
It made me wonder why we don’t write notes, give random compliments or send thank you notes like we used to. We have been programmed to save these little nuggets for special occasions or for only people we know. A while back I started telling people at the grocery, the bank, wherever, that I like their hair, their outfit, their smile or whatever spoke to me. It is amazing how it makes you feel and their entire attitude changes. We don’t need to save these things or think them privately.
Spread the gratitude, cheer and happiness everywhere you go. Make a difference in someone’s life today!
