Okay, so we live in Colorado and the term “Rocky Mountain High” or just “high” can bring up all kinds of conversations these days given the recent legalization of that little green leaf! I am going to tell you a little ditty that happened when my oldest was 11, which was about 8 years ago. Long before being high was…well, more accessible.
I have two daughters that have type 1 diabetes, so for the past 9 years our lives have been full of glucose monitors, glucose strips, lots of needles, insulin, lows and yes, high blood sugars.
On this particular day in 2006 I had picked up my girls from school and car-pooled them from gymnastics, to piano and had about 30 minutes before we needed to be at volleyball. We stopped at Taco Bell for a quick bite to eat. For any parent out there who knows what I am talking about, you understand that this is utter chaos. At this point in the day, everyone is DONE! I am quite literally in my own head and only thinking about the next step in my day. This is also the time my husband likes to call and “check in.”
Well, we had just ordered our food and with my 11, 9 and 4 year old in tow I was getting drinks. They, of course, were fighting and mixing drinks at the soda fountain, as they like to do. Andy called right in the middle of this very fun time to see how our oldest was doing.
She had been struggling with her blood sugar being high, which makes her not only feel awful, but difficult to deal with as well. I was frustrated and had my hands full. This is how our conversation went:
“How is she today?”
“What do you mean how is she? She is high again. She was high at breakfast, she was high at lunch and she is high now! I don’t know what we are going to do with her!”
At this point I turned around to see two, 20-somethings staring at me with horrified looks on their faces! At this point in the conversation I told Andy I would call him right back and we promptly walked to our car. I was laughing so hard by the time I got back to the car thinking about what those guys must have thought!
So, now I try to be a little more discreet when discussing our “highs” as who knows who may be listening!
