First Thanksgiving

For the month of November we will be posting a funny story about our Thanksgiving holiday on Fridays.  We would love to hear some of your stories as well.  Please share in the comment section.

(L) Our first Thanksgiving in Colorado we spent with friends and it was a potluck. It was a lot of fun, but we both missed our families and our traditions. We were 23, full of love and our own ideas of how we wanted to shape our holidays.

So, the next day we decided to begin making our own traditions. We planned to make our own Thanksgiving dinner, get our first Christmas tree and decorate it. It was going to be awesome!

It was a sad affair all the way around.

My hubby had received a turkey from work that year so I set out to cook it with all of the trimmings while he moved the one chair we owned to make room for the tree. Since I had never actually cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner there were a lot of phone calls to my mom for recipes. Of course, her recipes are all in her head so the instructions went something like this:

“Add a little bit of this, but not too much. I don’t know does it taste right? Just bake it until it looks like it’s almost done, but not overdone.”

So, how was it?

Really all that needs to be said is, “have you seen Christmas Vacation?” Yep, we cut into the turkey and it was grey and airy! So, there we were, just the two of us with a rotten turkey and no family. Fortunately, when you are 23 you can live on love so we went out and grabbed some food while we picked out the best Christmas tree ever!

Yep, still smiling. This is right before we realize the turkey is rotten!

We brought it home, put it into the tree holder and got out all 10 of our decorations! I told you it was sad.

I am not sure why we can only see this much of the tree. Perhaps I was lying on the floor crying, but you can still see how sad this tree is. Please notice there are no lights either.

At this point I was almost in tears and almost in a full on panic because I was failing at this whole holiday thing.

Hubby to the rescue! We went shopping and bought the cheapest Christmas ornaments we could find to fill our entire tree! In fact, we still have several of those ornaments and we are never getting rid of them because they represent a special memory for us now. We look back on that day and laugh because not only is it funny, it’s how most of us start out!
