We often talk about gratitude on our site but generally in an abstract way. Today, I had the opportunity, thanks to the kindness and understanding of another, to really be in it.
I was leaving the parking lot of my local grocery store and I almost ran right into another car as I pulled out of my parking space. Honestly, I am not sure how it happened. I wasn’t distracted, on the phone, or doing anything but “driving while human.”
Needless to say the other driver was quite upset although by hitting the brakes quickly we did avoid a near fender-bender. However, when we made eye contact I said “I am sorry, my fault.” She clearly understood my apology and replied with “It’s OK.”
BOOM I just got compassion!
She let me off the hook for being human and that we all make mistakes. I waived back and said “thank you.”
There, as simple as that, we both had the opportunity to extend compassion, receive compassion and I am certainly grateful. It was a small exchange and yet it could’ve easily ended in angry gestures, cars speeding off and negative emotions. But instead, other than feeling a bit like an idiot for my poor driving in that moment, I drove away feeling hopeful.
