Torture Report: Surrender, Slow Start and Pocahontas Returns

On the treadmill getting it done.

(G) Oh Torture Report you turn up like clockwork every week to allow me to highlight my pseudo moments of greatness and my inevitable moments of defeat.

As I sit here trying to reach back into the recesses of my brain to recall what happened as far back as last Tuesday I am at first stumped. And then it returns, slowly. Not all that unlike my running: slow and not always cooperative.

Last week was my first real, serious test of the new year. With January comes lots of extra work with everyone’s resolutions and such, so increased work hours keep me on the verge of exhaustion most of the month. I kept on track with my mid-week miles and strength training. And then my date with 17-ish miles was planned for Friday. Normally, I save LSD for the weekends. That is Long Slow Distance for all you ravers thinking I was admitting to something.
Anyway, I had conflicts on Saturday that made long distance impossible so I hit the workout on Friday. I decided somewhere along the way that it was easier to think about 4 hours running than it was to think about the distance so that’s what I did. I think it strangely worked.

In 4 hours I completed 17.7 miles. If you are one of the fast runners, please hold your judgment. Try as I might I am just SLOW. I do speedwork but all I have accomplished so far is being a little less painfully slow.

During my hours-long training I did resort to texting Lowi for a pep talk. We all need a bit of gratuitous encouragement now and then.

Just as I was basking in the glow of my 4 hours coming to an end something unbelievable came to mind: I still have NINE 45-second planks to do!!!!!

The planking helper continues to show up. I don’t much appreciate the additional 8 pounds but look how pleased she is.

Plank Challenge
Even in my weakened condition, I did get them done but it was tough especially for the first few. I was happy to have not missed a day. But then Saturday happened. After a long, overbooked, overscheduled week and a long run the day before I sort of disintegrated as the day progressed. Needless to say: no running, no planking. I was just totally done. I did manage to resurrect myself on Sunday but suffice it to say that this year is leap year for January. I am going to need 32 days to get the challenge done.

All smiles after 6 miles on Sunday. Who isn’t happy when their mileage is in single digits!!??

2,015 miles in 2015
I was thinking the other day that it felt like I have had a really slow start to the year. I began last year already 2 months into training for the 50-miler. Possibly I had been overthinking it a bit? So when January 2014 hit I was already running 20-mile days. But this year January 1 rolled around and I hadn’t done a mile over 5 since early November. By far a better approach for my sanity.

As I tend to be a little too structured and a little too serious about my miles at times I keep a running log for the year. It’s nice because the log is all set up and does the math for me. Hallelujah. Anyway, I am at 86.7 miles for the year. Two things about this are great. One, it’s not as slow of a start as it felt. Two, my miles are uneven. I know it’s silly but I am learning to be OK with my distance being 6.3 or 5.2 miles. I want to run free and not be a slave to my Garmin this year.

A few weeks ago I shared that I had fallen victim to letting Instagram be my workout partner. Well this dreadful little exercise showed up two more times in my email and on Facebook. Now I am a big believer in signs so I assumed this must mean that I was to be doing this exercise regularly. The best name for it I have seen thus far is called Surrender. I think it’s called that because you have to surrender your sanity to willingly and consistently partake in this one. But it seems like it will help me be a better climber so, SURRENDER!

(L)  Sometimes I make the mistake of reading G’s post before I actually write mine.  This was one of those times.  I hardly know where to begin after what she calls surrendering???  I think what she really means is that she wants to be more like me!

I, too, had to look back at my calendar to see where the torture report last left me.  It actually left me with my first long run of January and riding high on my accomplishment.  I stayed on my high for a few days getting all of my planks, runs and even some hill work in mountain style.  I had to volunteer on the ski hill last week so I ditched the skis and hiked up this mountain.  Now that will get your blood pumping!

2,015 miles in 2015?                                                                                                          I didn’t quite get the mileage in that I had planned this week, but I am at peace with it because my week, my home, my schedule feels…sacred.  It feels like I am right where I need to be.  Okay, so that is way behind G, but at least I am on the path.  I am sitting at 41 miles for the month and I know it’s time to step it up.

Planks...oh how I hate you.  I have decided that 30-second planks are more my speed.  I did the scheduled 45-second planks last week and I started to feel like I was coming down with the flu!  I mean 9?  I may need a leap month to complete this challenge.

Sugar Anyone?  I am happy to report that I am 3 days into my sugar detox again and it feels pretty good.  Although, I do have another trip to Nashville next week and oh how they like their sweet tea down there!  No worries, I prefer water to sweet tea, it’s the biscuits I will need to run from!

Pocahontas Returns?  I do have to tell you a funny story before I leave for the week.  So, today Shakira posted on FB that Pocahontas had signed up for the Outrun.  Since Pocahontas is my alter ego I literally had a moment where I was confused because I have not registered yet.  Then I realized that she was talking about the “real” Pocahontas or the psycho runner that we refer to as Pocahontas.  All of this reminds me that I had better step it up because at this point in the game I only have 15 weeks before the real Pocahontas is lapping my sorry butt on the trail!

The Torture Report began in January 2014 as a weekly update of our journey to completing a 50-mile race. Since then it’s continued on to become a chronicle of how we try mightily to find fitness, health and sometimes the finish line. We aren’t always successful but we keep showing up and telling you all about it on Tuesdays.
